Eye Health – Conjunctivitis

Common eye health conditions include dry eyes, conjunctivitis and minor eye irritation, most of which are not serious and settle with simple treatment

About eye health – conjunctivitis

The eyes are protected by tear film and blinking, but this can be disrupted by allergens, infection, screen use, ageing or environmental factors, leading to dryness, redness or irritation. Conjunctivitis (inflammation of the eye's surface membrane) can be caused by infection, allergy or irritants

Treatments

Symptoms

• Redness of the eye or eyelid

• Itching, burning or a gritty sensation

• Watering or discharge

• Sensitivity to light

• Blurred vision that clears with blinking

• Crusting of eyelashes, particularly on waking

Diagnosis

Most eye conditions are diagnosed by examining the eye and asking about symptoms, discharge type and any recent exposure to allergens or infection. Pain, significant vision loss, injury or symptoms not improving need urgent assessment, as these can indicate a more serious problem

Treatment

Lubricating eye drops relieve dryness and irritation. Infective conjunctivitis may be treated with antibacterial eye drops if bacterial, while viral conjunctivitis usually clears on its own; allergic conjunctivitis responds to antihistamine eye drops. Warm compresses can help with sticky or crusted eyes.

Prevention and self-care

• Avoid rubbing the eyes

• Take regular breaks from screens

• Remove eye make-up thoroughly each night

• Avoid sharing towels or pillowcases during an infection

• Wash hands before touching the eyes

• Wear sunglasses in bright conditions and avoid known allergens if prone to allergic irritation
