Yellow fever is a virus spread by day-biting mosquitoes in parts of Africa and South America. Most people recover, but a small number develop severe illness affecting the liver and kidneys.

Symptoms

Fever, headache, muscle aches, nausea and vomiting. Severe cases cause jaundice and bleeding.

Bites from infected daytime mosquitoes

3 to 6 days

Prevention

Vaccination, plus covering up and using an effective insect repellent

Who it suits

A live vaccine, so it is not suitable for everyone. It needs assessment before it is given, particularly if you are pregnant, immunosuppressed or over 60.
